Exeter kicks off 2014 season at Quinsig

Eight Exeter crews had their first races of the season at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA against Andover, Simsbury, Shrewsbury, Brookline, and Northfield Mount Hermon. This comes less than two weeks after the squads’ first on-the-water practices to due persistent ice on the Squamscot. Conditions at Quinsigamond were another challenge, as all crews dealt with choppy water and a tailwind gusting beyond 20 miles per hour. Exeter’s G1, G2, and B1 finished in first, while B2, G3, B3, G4, and B4 all finished second to Andover.

Girls co-captain Jenny DiPietro ’14 praised all of the girls boats on their resilience despite the late start to the season and difficult conditions at Quinsigamond. G1 had a strong start that separated them from the pack, with only Andover keeping up. “The body of the race is the segment that needs the most work…the strength is definitely there, we just need the technical aspects of the stroke to come together.” In the end, G1’s sprint edged them ahead of Andover, taking first by just less than a length. DiPietro noted that “Our race plan wasn’t as solid as it normally is later in the season, but that left us room for improvisation which helped in the tough conditions.”

2013 NEIRA: B1, G1, G2 take gold

The first, second, and third eights of the boys and girls squads returned to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA on Saturday for the 2013 New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championship Regatta. Conditions were challenging throughout the day, with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour and temperatures in the 40sone of the coldest NEIRA regattas in recent memory.

In the morning heats, all boats qualified except for B2, who fell less than one tenth of one second short of qualification for the afternoon finals in a tightly contested race with BC High and St. Paul’s. In the afternoon, northwesterly winds picked up, making starts challenging for even the most experienced coxswains. On the boys side, B1 won gold by open water, winning the championship for the first time since 2008. B3 took 4th, less than one twentieth of a second behind third-place St. John’s. On the girls side, G1 won gold by nearly five seconds, their sixth championship in eight years. G2 beat out Kent by over three seconds to win first, while G3 finished in second, sixth-tenths of a second behind Kent.
